Job responsibilities

  • Provide financial information and advice to the Divisional General Manager, Clinical Directors and other managers within the relevant Directorates; meet regularly with these managers to identify potential financial problems and implement corrective action.
  • Take overall responsibility for all aspects of budgetary management within the relevant directorates, monitor performance and advise on corrective action; lead in the annual budget setting process.
  • Lead the implementation and monitoring of recharging mechanisms to improve budgetary control; authorize expenditure within the Directorates and the advertisement of vacant posts to ensure funding is available.
  • Support the development and implementation of Divisional Business Plans in line with the Trust's strategic aims; provide financial and non-financial advice for these plans.
  • Provide the Head of Management Accounts with information for corporate reporting, including explaining significant variance movements for the Trust Board Report.
  • Assist Clinical Directors and Service Managers in identifying and achieving cost improvement and income generation targets; review existing practices to improve efficiency.
  • Contribute to the development of new costing and budgeting methodologies for managerial and commercial purposes.
  • Review Aintree costs relative to national norms and other provider units; verify significant variations.
  • Monitor services provided to other Trusts under Service Level Agreements and renegotiate SLAs as necessary.
  • Take financial responsibility in competitive tendering to ensure best value; prepare financial option appraisal reports for presentation to the Trust board with recommendations.

Qualifications

  • Essential: CCAB Qualified Accountant
  • Essential: Evidence of commitment to continued professional development
  • Desirable: Educated to degree level

Experience

  • Essential: Post-qualification experience; evidence of innovative analysis of complex financial and performance data; experience of staff management/development; track record of achievement
  • Desirable: NHS financial management experience; experience of working with senior managers and clinicians

Knowledge

  • Essential: In-depth knowledge of financial planning, budgetary strategy & control, NHS Trust financial regime, and NHS business case processes

Skills

  • Essential: Highly numerate; ability to lead and motivate staff; open and developmental leadership style; commitment to staff development; decisive with sound judgement; knowledge of HR policies
  • Essential: Strategic and innovative thinking; excellent written and verbal communication across varied audiences; strong influencing and negotiation skills; proficient in Microsoft Office and financial modelling

Desirable

  • Desirable: Understanding of NHS structures; knowledge of the acute hospital environment
