Research Laboratory Technician Team Leader

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated Research Laboratory Technician Team Leader to join the Liverpool Vaccine Group (LVG) within the Human Challenge Facility (HCF). This role is responsible for the day-to-day management of laboratory operations, supporting a portfolio of controlled human infection studies and ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality research services.

As the primary point of contact for a team of laboratory technicians, you will oversee staff capacity, equipment maintenance, safety compliance, and sample management, while contributing to the development of laboratory processes and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities are (but not limited to):

• Lead and manage a team of laboratory technicians, ensuring training, competency, and effective resource allocation.
• Oversee microbiological activities, including microbial culture, frozen stock preparation, and sterility checks for human inoculation studies.
• Ensure compliance with GCP, GCLP, HTA, HSE, and MHRA standards, maintaining inspection readiness at all times.
• Manage laboratory operations, including sample tracking, equipment calibration, procurement, and record keeping.
• Provide technical guidance and training to researchers, students, and laboratory staff.
• Monitor laboratory expenditure and assist in budgeting, reporting, and financial planning.

You will possess:

• A BSc or MSc in a Biological Science (e.g. Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology) or equivalent relevant experience.
• Proven experience working in a research laboratory, including microbiological culture, mammalian cell culture, molecular biology techniques (e.g. qPCR, RT-PCR), and immunoassays.
• Experience working with Category 3 facilities and handling clinical samples.
• Strong organisational and leadership skills, with the ability to manage teams and deliver to deadlines.
• Knowledge of laboratory regulations (HTA, GCP, HSE, GLP) and a commitment to continuous improvement and quality culture.
